Metal thieves targeting houses

Metal thieves in Leicester are turning their attention to people's houses - often attacking the properties while the occupiers are inside.

Altogether 10 houses in Lancashire Street in Belgrave had lead stolen from their bay windows in one night.

Houses in nearby St Michael's Avenue were also damaged by thieves in the last few days.

The police said they were working with local scrap metal merchants to identify any rogue dealers.

Councillor Rashmikant Joshi said that in one case the house owner managed to disturb the thieves and the lead was left intact.

He added: "Not only houses in this city have been targeted but places of worship like temples and churches have also been targeted. And we are appealing to the police to do their best to tackle this problem."

Some of the residents have decided to replace the lead with felt to deter the thieves.

Now there are plans to set up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme to reassure residents.
